S.E. Third Avenue to close for six weeks starting Tuesday for storm sewer project

Beginning Tuesday, April 8, S.E. Third Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Johnson Street and Arthur Street for approximately six weeks as construction begins on Phase I of the Grant Street Storm Sewer Project.

City officials say the closure is necessary to allow crews to install new storm sewer infrastructure that will improve drainage in the surrounding area. The work is expected to alleviate persistent flooding issues, particularly near the railroad underpass on S.E. 10th Avenue, which is frequently overwhelmed during heavy rain.

Through traffic will be detoured via S.E. 10th Avenue at Johnson and Arthur Streets for the duration of the closure. Local access for residents and businesses along the affected stretch of Third Avenue will be maintained where possible, but drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, use alternate routes, and expect some delays.

The Grant Street Storm Sewer Project is designed to redirect stormwater flow and increase capacity in the drainage system around S.E. Seventh Avenue and Grant Street. Officials say the improvements are long overdue, as the existing infrastructure struggles to handle runoff during major weather events.

"This project is a key part of modernizing our stormwater system and reducing the risk of street flooding in this area," said a spokesperson from the city’s Public Works Department. "We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to make these important upgrades."

Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians are reminded to obey posted signs, detour routes, and use caution in construction zones.

For updates on the project and traffic impacts, residents can visit the city’s website or follow the Public Works Department on social media.
