Four arrested in connection to 2024 Eastridge drive-by shooting

After nearly a year of dedicated investigative work, the Amarillo Police Department has announced the arrest of four young men in connection to a drive-by shooting that took place in the Eastridge neighborhood on May 2, 2024.

The shooting, which authorities say was a premeditated and targeted attack, occurred at a residence where several people were present, including children. Although no injuries were reported, officials confirmed that a bullet came dangerously close to striking an infant — missing by only six inches — heightening the seriousness of the incident and the urgency of the investigation.

“This was not just reckless violence; it was a coordinated assault in a residential area with innocent lives at risk,” said an Amarillo Police Department spokesperson. “We’re thankful that no one was hurt, but this could have easily turned tragic.”

The investigation was led by the Neighborhood Police Officers assigned to the Eastridge area. According to the department, officers relied on an extensive array of resources to piece together what happened, including surveillance footage, department technological tools, and multiple evidentiary warrants.

Over the course of the year, investigators conducted forensic analyses and numerous interviews, ultimately leading to the identification and arrest of four suspects — all 18 or 19 years old at the time of arrest:

Matthew Wayne Austin Jr, 18, of Amarillo

Joshua Michael Benavidez Jr, 19, of Amarillo

Saul Angel Castillo, 18, of Amarillo

Juan Angel Rueda Jr, 18, of Amarillo

Each of the four is now facing serious felony charges, including Aggravated Assault, two counts of Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity, and Deadly Conduct Discharge Firearm.

The case underscores what law enforcement officials describe as a growing concern over organized criminal activity involving young adults and minors in Amarillo. Police emphasized that while arrests have been made, the investigation remains ongoing, and more individuals could still be implicated.

“The perseverance of our officers — especially those in the neighborhood policing unit — made all the difference,” the department added in its statement. “This is about protecting our communities and holding those accountable who put others in danger.”

Authorities are asking anyone with further information about the case to contact the Amarillo Police Department or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
