Former Hutchinson County Sheriff Blaik Kemp arrested on stalking charge

Former Hutchinson County Sheriff Blaik Kemp was arrested Monday on a felony stalking charge tied to a warrant issued out of Potter County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Kemp, once considered a rising star in Texas law enforcement, was taken into custody early Monday morning in Moore County. The charge stems from an incident that allegedly occurred in Amarillo, located in Potter County. Details regarding the circumstances of the stalking allegation have not yet been released by authorities.

Kemp, who made headlines in 2020 as the youngest elected sheriff in Texas, served Hutchinson County until January 2024. He announced in July 2023 that he would not seek re-election, stepping away from office after a single term.

Despite the severity of the charge, Kemp was released from custody later Monday on a $20,000 bond. The former sheriff has not made a public statement regarding the arrest, and it remains unclear if he has retained legal counsel.

The case is being handled by Potter County officials, with further proceedings expected in the coming weeks. The investigation is ongoing, and no additional charges have been announced.

Kemp's arrest marks a sharp turn in the career of a lawman once touted for bringing youthful energy to the sheriff’s office. Community members and officials in Hutchinson County have expressed surprise at the news, and many are awaiting more information as the case develops.
