The City of Amarillo is taking a major step forward in its commitment to building vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods—this time with a special focus on the Eastridge community. City officials from the Parks and Recreation Department and the Planning Department are inviting residents to help shape the design and features of a proposed neighborhood park tailored specifically for Eastridge.
As part of the broader Eastridge Neighborhood Plan, which outlines strategies for improving quality of life in the area, the creation of a neighborhood park was identified as a top priority. City leaders say the park will serve not only as a place for recreation but as a community anchor—offering a welcoming space for families, children, and neighbors to come together.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the Eastridge community to help create something truly meaningful,” said Emily Koller, Director of Planning for the City of Amarillo. “City parks are the focal point of neighborhoods. Whether it be for recreation or for neighborhood events, parks can bring people together. Community input is vital as part of the Eastridge Neighborhood Plan, and the city wants to foster as much resident participation as possible as this proposed plan progresses.”
To ensure the final design reflects the wants and needs of those who will use it most, the city is encouraging residents to provide feedback in one of two ways:
Online Survey – A short, easy-to-complete survey is available now and will remain open through May 5. Residents can share their ideas, preferences, and concerns by visiting: https://bit.ly/3G2w97T
In-Person Community Event – Residents are also invited to join city staff for a community feedback event on Wednesday, April 24, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Eastridge School Park. The come-and-go event will offer interactive boards, information about the proposed park, and opportunities to talk directly with city planners and staff.
City officials say they are especially eager to hear from families, youth, seniors, and local leaders who live and work in the Eastridge area. The hope is that the new park will reflect the diversity, culture, and spirit that make Eastridge unique.
The Eastridge neighborhood, located in the eastern part of Amarillo, is home to a multicultural population with a strong sense of community. Residents have expressed a desire for safe, accessible outdoor spaces where children can play, families can gather, and neighbors can host events—from birthday parties to community celebrations. With this feedback effort, the city is hoping to turn those ideas into reality.
In recent years, Amarillo has prioritized neighborhood planning as a way to ensure long-term growth and quality of life across different parts of the city. The Eastridge Neighborhood Plan is part of that vision, with goals that include improved infrastructure, safer streets, and stronger community bonds. Parks, officials say, are an essential part of that equation.
“We want this park to be a reflection of the people who live here,” said Koller. “Whether it’s a playground, walking trails, open green space, or cultural elements like murals or art, we want to know what matters most to residents. This is their neighborhood—this is their park.”
Community members are encouraged to spread the word to friends and neighbors. The more voices heard, the better the city can plan a park that serves everyone.
