The snow may have blanketed Hodgetown just days ago, but now the field is green, the skies are clear, and the smell of popcorn is already in the air. That’s right — the boys of summer are back, and the 2025 season for the Amarillo Sod Poodles is officially underway.
It’s hard to believe that just 48 hours ago, Hodgetown was under five inches of snow. Fast forward to Tuesday, and fans are being welcomed by sunshine, warm weather, and the unmistakable buzz of Opening Night. This isn’t just the start of another baseball season — it’s the kickoff of what the Sod Poodles front office promises will be the biggest and best season yet.
A Season Built on Creativity & Community
Tony Ensor, the team’s president and general manager, made it clear: this year is about raising the bar. “Our front office team has spent the last five or six months creating a plan, a mission if you will, to make the 2025 season the biggest and best ever,” Ensor said.
That’s no small claim. But for fans who’ve followed the Poodles over the years, they know the team doesn’t just deliver baseball — they deliver an experience. From the creativity in promotions to the connection with the community, Hodgetown is a place where fun and baseball meet.
What's New at Hodgetown This Season?
The team has made a real investment in improving both the fan experience and the stadium itself. Here are some of the big upgrades and features fans can expect this season:
New Infield and Infrastructure: The Sod Poodles now boast a completely rebuilt infield, upgraded netting, and expanded locker rooms — including new facilities for female staff and players. These upgrades not only enhance player safety and comfort, but also bring the stadium up to full Major League Baseball compliance for the next five years.
Increased Fan Safety: Metal detectors have been added to the entrance process. According to Director of Marketing Anna Spinks, these detectors are similar to what you'd see at Major League or spring training games. “They’re just to ensure the safety of our fans,” Spinks noted. It’s a simple change that helps everyone feel a little more at ease.
Entertainment Beyond the Diamond: Minor league baseball has always been about more than just what happens between the foul lines. The Sod Poodles are doubling down on that tradition this year. Expect drone shows, fireworks, in-between inning contests, car giveaways, and more. Oh — and don’t forget the Yellow City Pig Weeds, a playful alternate identity that fans have come to love.
Baseball, Amarillo Style
This season begins with a six-game homestand and marks the first of 69 home games scheduled at Hodgetown for the year. That’s 69 chances to grab a hot dog, cheer on the team, and enjoy the uniquely Amarillo blend of baseball and community spirit.
Minor league baseball is special — not just because of the future big-leaguers playing their hearts out, but because it brings a city together. It’s families filling the stands, kids chasing foul balls, and the joy of sharing timeless moments under the stadium lights.
