The Amarillo Police Department is once again turning to the public for help solving a chilling 16-year-old murder that continues to haunt investigators and the community.
Sherry Mondragon, 55, was first reported missing on January 25, 2009. For three agonizing months, her loved ones had no answers—until a grim discovery was made in April of that year. Her body was found wrapped in a rug and left inside the detached garage of a vacant home in the 1300 block of N. Spring Street.
An autopsy later confirmed the worst: Mondragon had been shot in the back before her body was abandoned in the garage.
Despite the passage of time, detectives have not given up on the case. The Amarillo Police Department’s Cold Case Unit continues to investigate the murder, hoping that someone in the community may remember a key detail or finally feel ready to come forward.
The case has long been a painful reminder of the violence that can strike close to home. Police believe that someone out there knows what happened to Mondragon — or at least has information that could help detectives put the puzzle together.
Anyone with information about Sherry Mondragon’s death is urged to contact the Amarillo Police Department Cold Case Unit directly at 806-378-6468.
