Amarillo to open new Women’s Health Clinic to expand access to care in the Texas Panhandle

In a major step toward improving women’s and maternal health care in the Texas Panhandle, the City of Amarillo has announced the opening of its new Women’s Health Clinic at Amarillo Public Health (APH), set to begin serving the community on Monday, April 28.

Located at 850 Martin Road, the clinic will operate Mondays through Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will offer a wide range of essential health services tailored specifically for women.

City officials and health leaders are calling the clinic’s opening a significant milestone in addressing longstanding gaps in health care access throughout the region. APH Director Casie Stoughton emphasized the importance of the clinic in tackling the lack of maternal and women’s health services across the Texas Panhandle.

“Amarillo Public Health is extremely grateful for our city council who recognized the need for improved health care for women not only in Amarillo, but for the entire Amarillo area,” said Stoughton. “The new Women’s Health Clinic will greatly expand treatment and health care resources for women in our community, and we are excited to open this new clinic. It will really be a historic day.”

The clinic's launch comes in response to stark regional disparities in access to care. As Stoughton noted last fall, only about five counties in the Texas Panhandle currently have full access to maternal health care services, leaving the majority of the region underserved.

“Most counties in the Texas Panhandle area have either no access or very low access,” Stoughton said. “Women’s health services are really critical here in our community. Our hope is that, as women are able to take care of themselves, we will have healthy women, healthy families, healthy babies, a healthier community—and so I think it’s going to be a really great service.”

In December 2024, the Amarillo City Council allocated $1.39 million in funding to support the clinic's development, recognizing the urgent need for expanded health services.

The Women’s Health Clinic will offer a comprehensive range of services including:

Cervical cancer screenings

STD testing and treatment

Mammogram referrals

Pregnancy testing

A variety of contraception options

Resource navigation for further health support and services

Officials hope the clinic will serve as a model for other rural and underserved areas seeking to boost maternal health and women’s wellness.
