The Amarillo Police Department has released details about a multi-vehicle crash that resulted in multiple injuries and two arrests late Thursday night.
According to APD, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Hillside Road and Bell Street at approximately 11:01 p.m. on March 6 in response to a serious collision involving several vehicles.
Investigators determined that two vehicles—a Chevrolet Camaro and a Dodge Charger—had been engaged in an illegal street race while traveling eastbound on Hillside. As the cars approached the intersection at Bell Street, the driver of the Camaro, identified as 21-year-old David Ortiz, attempted to avoid stopped traffic by turning into a Walgreens parking lot. Meanwhile, the driver of the Charger, 21-year-old Michael Clark, lost control of his vehicle at the intersection and crashed into four cars that were stopped at the red light.
Authorities reported that at least five individuals sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.
Following the incident, both Ortiz and Clark were taken into custody. Ortiz was charged with “Racing Causing Serious Bodily Injury” and “Intoxication Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury,” while Clark faced charges of “Racing Causing Serious Bodily Injury” and “Driving While Intoxicated.”
Both men were booked into the Randall County Jail as the APD Traffic Investigation Unit continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the wreck.
