Pantex opens Palo Duro Research Facility on WT campus


Pantex has officially opened the Palo Duro Research Facility on the campus of West Texas A&M University (WT), marking a major milestone in the ongoing partnership between the nuclear security enterprise and higher education. This new research hub is expected to bolster regional innovation, workforce development, and scientific collaboration.

The facility, the first of its kind for Pantex on a university campus, represents a deepened relationship between the Texas A&M University System and the nuclear security sector. Officials say the initiative will help bridge the gap between academia and industry, providing valuable opportunities for students and researchers alike.

A Strategic Partnership for Innovation

Pantex has long played a vital role in the Texas Panhandle, and this expansion reinforces its commitment to both the region and national security. Dr. Kelly Beierschmitt, PanTeXas Deterrence President and General Manager, emphasized the broader significance of this partnership.

“This partnership represents not just a physical space, but a commitment to the future—one that fosters innovation and collaboration,” Beierschmitt said.

The research center, housed in a renovated former hospital building owned by WT, now serves as a hub for Pantex’s research and development (R&D) initiatives. The facility features over 7,500 square feet of dedicated research and office space and accommodates 15 members of Pantex’s R&D group.

Advancing STEM Education and Workforce Development

A key benefit of the Palo Duro Research Facility is its role in educating and training future professionals. Tyfani Lanier, Pantex Engineering Director and Chief Engineer, highlighted the facility’s importance in shaping the next generation of engineers and scientists.

“The Palo Duro Research Center is more than just a physical structure—it’s an environment where engineers and scientists will take on the challenges of tomorrow while partnering with future leaders.”

Through this collaboration, WT students in STEM fields will gain hands-on experience, access to internship opportunities, and exposure to advanced research in material science, digital technologies, and advanced manufacturing.

Dr. Angela Spaulding, WT’s Vice President of Research and Compliance, stressed the significance of the facility in enhancing workforce readiness and economic development.

“The new Pantex Lab on the WT campus is more than just a facility—it is a bridge between education and industry, research and real-world application,” she said. “The innovations developed here will drive economic growth and strengthen national security.”

A Project Years in the Making

The Palo Duro Research Facility has been nearly three years in development, requiring the coordination of multiple teams from both WT and Pantex.

Ben Stallwitz, Technology Development Director for Pantex Engineering, credited the success of the project to collaborative efforts across multiple organizations.

“I think you could point to a lot of people in a lot of organizations at Pantex and WT who worked hard to get this project across the finish line.”

The research conducted at the facility will focus on exploratory R&D, expanding Pantex’s capabilities in cutting-edge scientific disciplines.

“This space provides us a great opportunity to continue to grow our partnerships and leverage the collective intellectual horsepower of our researchers,” Stallwitz added.

Strengthening Ties Between Pantex and the Panhandle

For both Pantex and WT, the establishment of the research facility is about more than just science—it’s about reinforcing a commitment to the Texas Panhandle.

WT President Walter V. Wendler emphasized the university’s role in serving the region, stating:

“Having Pantex on the campus is another way WT is serving locally first, paying attention to our region, and investing in people, programs, and places as THE Panhandle’s University.”

With the Palo Duro Research Facility now fully operational, officials from both institutions are looking forward to a future of innovation, collaboration, and growth—ensuring that the Texas Panhandle continues to play a pivotal role in national security and scientific advancement.
