The Amarillo Independent School District (AISD) has officially named its next superintendent. Deidre Parrish, currently serving as superintendent of Sweetwater ISD, signed a three-year contract last week, securing her role as the district’s top leader starting March 18.
Parrish’s contract, approved by the AISD Board of Trustees, includes an annual salary of $300,000, along with relocation assistance and other standard benefits. The agreement, which runs through June 30, 2028, also features performance-based incentives and professional development opportunities.
A Rigorous Search Process
The decision to hire Parrish followed a nationwide search that drew 24 candidates. The board gradually narrowed the field to four finalists before selecting Parrish, citing her extensive leadership experience and expertise in curriculum development as key factors.
“She has a history of success as a superintendent and brings the qualities we need to lead our district forward,” said AISD Board President Doyle Corder. “We are excited about her vision and the impact she will have on our students and staff.”
Parrish’s background in education is both broad and diverse. Before leading Sweetwater ISD, she served as superintendent of Darrouzett ISD and held leadership roles in Frisco ISD and Decatur ISD.
A Smooth Leadership Transition
With her official start date set for mid-March, Parrish will work closely with outgoing Superintendent Doug Loomis, who will remain available in a consulting role during the transition. Loomis is expected to assist with curriculum initiatives and district planning to ensure continuity.
“I am excited to join Amarillo ISD and be part of such a strong community,” Parrish said. “My goal is to listen, learn, and build relationships with our staff, students, and families. We will work together to continue the district’s successes and find new opportunities to grow.”
She also emphasized her commitment to community engagement, stating that she intends to visit all AISD campuses and connect with local organizations, parent groups, and business leaders.
“I don’t just want to be a visitor,” she said. “I want to be part of Amarillo and invest in this district the same way this community invests in its students.”
What’s Ahead for AISD?
Parrish steps into her role as AISD addresses several significant initiatives, including school consolidations and curriculum updates. Board members expressed confidence that hiring her ahead of the next school year will provide valuable time to familiarize herself with the district’s needs.
“She will have time to get settled in, meet with stakeholders, and develop a clear vision for the future,” Corder said. “This is an exciting step for AISD, and we are confident in her ability to lead us forward.”
