Kids, Incorporated and APD respond to incident at Austin Middle School

A youth basketball game at Austin Middle School took an unfortunate turn on Saturday when a physical altercation broke out between adults, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Amarillo Police Department (APD).

According to APD, officers received multiple calls around 3 p.m. reporting a fight inside the gym. Witnesses stated that the dispute began when one team was preparing to play while another group remained on the court. The verbal argument quickly escalated into a physical altercation. Authorities on the scene took statements and reviewed video footage provided by a witness.

In response to the incident, the attorney for Kids, Incorporated, the organization overseeing the youth basketball game, released a statement condemning the altercation and emphasizing their commitment to safety.

“There is no place for this behavior in youth sports and absolutely no excuse for such behavior,” the statement read. “Kids, Incorporated is fully cooperating with law enforcement and Amarillo Independent School District to identify those involved.”

The organization assured the public that any individuals found responsible for the altercation will face strict consequences.

“Anyone proven to be involved in this incident will be formally trespassed from all Kids, Incorporated facilities and program locations, including coaching and/or attending any and all Kids, Incorporated events in the future.”

Additionally, Kids, Incorporated stated that it is reviewing its protocols to prevent future incidents, emphasizing that youth sports should be a safe and welcoming environment for children and families.

The Amarillo Police Department has confirmed that a report was made and that the case remains under investigation. Further details, including potential criminal charges, will be determined as the investigation unfolds.

Kids, Incorporated declined to comment further out of respect for the ongoing case.
