Jimmy Johnson named interim Chief of Police

The Amarillo Police Department (APD) will be under familiar leadership as Assistant Chief Jimmy Johnson steps into the role of interim Chief of Police. The City of Amarillo made the formal appointment to maintain stability within the department while conducting a national search for a permanent replacement.

Johnson, a seasoned law enforcement officer with over 30 years of experience, has built a career rooted in service to the Amarillo community. His appointment ensures continuity in leadership as the city embarks on a deliberate and comprehensive selection process expected to conclude in early 2026.

A Trusted Leader with Deep Amarillo Roots

Born and raised in Amarillo, Johnson has dedicated his career to public safety. He joined APD in 1988 as a jailor before becoming a sworn officer the following year. Over the decades, he has held a variety of critical roles, including:

Patrol Officer and Detective

Community Oriented Policing and Problem-Solving Unit (COPPS)

Specialized Teams: Dive Team, SWAT Team, Peer Counseling, and Honor Guard

Johnson’s expertise extends beyond fieldwork. His academic credentials include a Bachelor’s Degree in Justice Administration from Wayland Baptist University, a Master Peace Officer License, and an Instructor License through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Session 282) and the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Leadership Series, both highly respected programs that shape top law enforcement leaders.

Johnson’s leadership experience includes a stint as interim Chief of Police in Dalhart (August–November 2022), which provided him with valuable insights into overseeing an entire department.

Commitment to Stability and Community Engagement

Johnson expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining public safety and strengthening community relationships.

“I am honored to serve the citizens of Amarillo in this capacity and to lead the dedicated men and women of APD during this important transition,” said Johnson. “We will continue our commitment to public safety, professionalism, and community engagement while the City selects the best candidate for the department’s future.”

National Search for a Permanent Chief Underway

The City of Amarillo has outlined a multi-phase selection process for the next Chief of Police, prioritizing a thoughtful and strategic approach:

Spring 2025: The City will finalize and release a request for proposals (RFP) to hire an executive search firm specializing in law enforcement recruitment.

Summer 2025: The City will partner with a recruitment firm to develop materials and strategies for the national search.

Fall 2025: Formal recruitment begins after the adoption of Amarillo’s 2025/2026 budget in September.

Candidate evaluations, interviews, and public engagement will take place between October and December.

Early 2026: The next Chief of Police is expected to be appointed by January 2026.

A Deliberate Search for the Right Leader

City officials emphasize that taking the necessary time to find the best candidate is in the long-term interest of both APD and the community.

“With Assistant Chief Johnson’s extensive experience, deep-rooted commitment to our community, and strong leadership skills, we know the department remains in capable hands as we undertake the search for a permanent Chief,” said Andrew Freeman, Deputy City Manager and Public Safety Director.

The City’s focus remains on finding a leader who aligns with Amarillo’s public safety goals and can build upon the department’s legacy of service and professionalism.

For now, Johnson will guide APD through this transition period, ensuring that public safety remains a top priority while the City works toward securing its next permanent Chief.
