Glenn Hegar confirmed as next Texas A&M University System chancellor

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar has been officially confirmed as the next chancellor of The Texas A&M University System following a unanimous vote by the Board of Regents on Friday. Hegar will succeed Chancellor John Sharp, who is set to retire on June 30 after nearly 14 years of leadership.

A New Era for the Texas A&M System

Hegar, a 1993 graduate of Texas A&M University, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead one of the largest and most prestigious university systems in the country.

"I am grateful and honored that the Board of Regents has entrusted me with the responsibility of leading one of the greatest university systems in the nation," Hegar said. "Our core values unite us and set the Texas A&M System apart from the others, and I remain steadfastly committed to upholding and preserving those values."

The Texas A&M University System is one of the largest in the United States, overseeing 11 universities and eight state agencies with a $7.3 billion annual budget. The system plays a crucial role in education, research, and public service across Texas.

Proven Leadership and Vision

Hegar, who currently serves as the state's chief financial officer, has a long history of public service. He was elected Texas Comptroller in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 and 2022. Before that, he served in both the Texas House of Representatives and the Senate.

During his tenure as comptroller, Hegar played a significant role in boosting Texas' economy, helping elevate it from the 12th to the 8th largest in the world. His leadership experience and financial expertise are expected to benefit the Texas A&M System as it continues to expand its influence in education, research, and economic development.

Hegar outlined his top priorities as chancellor, which include:

✅ Expanding student experiences

✅ Creating economic opportunities

✅ Strengthening the A&M System’s commitment to serving Texans statewide

Strong Support from the Board and Outgoing Chancellor

The Board of Regents expressed full confidence in Hegar’s ability to lead the system into the future.

"The Board of Regents is confident that Glenn Hegar will be an outstanding Chancellor," said Chairman Bill Mahomes. "He will advance System excellence in its core missions: offering high-quality, affordable education; serving Texans throughout our great state; and conducting world-class research to improve people’s lives."

Outgoing Chancellor John Sharp, who has led the system since 2011, also voiced his support.

"Glenn Hegar understands the power and the potential of the Texas A&M System. I have no doubt he will lead it with integrity and vision," Sharp said. "I wish him and his family the best."

A Texan Through and Through

A sixth-generation Texan, Hegar grew up in Hockley and continues to farm land that has been in his family since the mid-1800s. His deep roots in Texas and firsthand understanding of the state’s economy and education system position him well to lead Texas A&M into a new era.

Hegar was first announced as the sole finalist for the chancellor position on March 7, following a 21-day waiting period required by Texas law before the Board could finalize its selection.

With his confirmation now official, Hegar is set to begin his tenure as chancellor on July 1, 2024, ushering in a new chapter for the Texas A&M University System.
