A new inclusive playground is coming to Thompson Park, thanks to nearly $1.2 million in funding approved by the Amarillo City Council. The project aims to provide a play space that is accessible to all children, regardless of ability, making it a much-needed addition to the northeast side of town.
At Tuesday’s council meeting, officials approved Phase 1 site work for the playground, which will include ramps and other accommodations for individuals with disabilities and sensory concerns. The funding comes from a combination of a Community Development Block Grant and general construction funds through the Parks and Recreation Department.
Expanding Accessibility for Amarillo Families
Currently, families in need of an accessible playground have to drive across town to Medi Park. Deputy Director of Community Development Stefanie Rodarte-Suto says that shouldn’t be the case.
"There was no reason for every family to have to do that when we have a great park area here on the northeast end of town," Rodarte-Suto said. "So we just thought that would be a great option to bring a play space, really similar, unique in design, but just have some of those similar elements."
The City of Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department is also working to improve safety at Thompson Park by adding more lighting to keep the area well-lit at night.
Investing in Quality of Life
Mayor Cole Stanley praised the Parks and Recreation Department for prioritizing quality-of-life improvements while staying within budget.
"They are expanding, so this Parks and Rec Department has thought out of the box," Stanley said. "Mr. Kashuba has been bringing those quality-of-life issuances and he’s been doing it within his given budget. Now, he’s borrowing money to get this done so he can pay it out over the next five, six, seven years."
The playground project is still in its early stages. Phase 1 will focus on site preparation and groundwork, while future phases will finalize design elements. The community development team will present various design options to the city council at an upcoming meeting, where they will also consider public feedback on the park’s appearance and features.
