City of Canyon earns film friendly Texas certification

The City of Canyon has officially been designated as a Film Friendly Texas Certified Community, Governor Greg Abbott announced on Thursday. This recognition, awarded by the Texas Film Commission (TFC), places Canyon among more than 175 communities across the state that have completed the rigorous training and certification process designed to attract film and media productions to Texas.

What It Means for Canyon

By achieving this designation, Canyon is now equipped to welcome film, television, commercial, animation, and video game productions to the area. The certification process ensures that local officials and businesses understand the needs of the industry, creating a streamlined process for filmmakers seeking locations, permits, and local support.

Governor Abbott emphasized the economic benefits of being a Film Friendly Texas community.

“Congratulations to Canyon on earning the Film Friendly Texas designation and joining more than 175 other Texas communities that have received this recognition,” Abbott said. “Through the Film Friendly Texas training and certification process, Texas communities are prepared to help match local businesses with production-related needs, creating jobs for Texas-based crew members and local residents, as well as spurring on-site spending at local businesses.”

Growing the Film Industry in the Texas Panhandle

Canyon now joins several other nearby communities that have earned the Film Friendly Texas certification, including Amarillo, Borger, Canadian, Childress, Dumas, Fritch, Muleshoe, and Shamrock. This designation further strengthens the Texas Panhandle’s appeal to filmmakers, with its wide-open landscapes, historic charm, and welcoming community.

The Texas Film Commission has played a key role in marketing Texas as a prime destination for media production since its establishment in 1971. The commission provides resources for local communities and works closely with production companies to ensure a smooth filming experience.

A Boost for Local Businesses and Job Opportunities

With this certification, Canyon stands to benefit from increased economic activity, tourism, and job opportunities. Film productions typically bring a surge of spending to local businesses, from restaurants and hotels to hardware stores and transportation services. The presence of film crews also provides employment opportunities for local residents in various production-related roles.

Governor Abbott reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Texas communities in their efforts to attract film and media productions:

“Texas is brimming with promise, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside all of our communities to ensure they have the knowledge and tools needed to succeed.”

Looking Ahead

With its new Film Friendly Texas designation, Canyon is now in a strong position to attract filmmakers looking for scenic backdrops and a supportive community. As more productions explore Texas for their projects, Canyon could soon find itself featured on the big screen.
