The City of Amarillo (COA) is giving residents another chance to shape the future of street safety with 16 proposed projects under the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Plan. Following an extensive outreach campaign that gathered over 6,100 community responses, COA is now asking the public to identify their top five priority projects before the Wednesday, February 12 deadline.
Residents can submit their feedback online at amarillo.gov/safe-streets.
“The response from the Amarillo community for the Safe Streets and Roads for All Plan has been invaluable,” said COA Director of Planning Emily Koller. “We greatly appreciate all who are providing their input to this important public safety initiative.”
A Community-Focused Safety Plan
The SS4A campaign has been an ongoing effort, including public engagement events at the Amarillo Downtown Library and Southwest Branch Library. Planning began last February, with a clear goal: to make Amarillo’s streets safer for everyone—whether traveling by car, bike, wheelchair, on foot, or public transit.
One key initiative, the Safer Speeds for Schools Project, recently secured $523,440 in federal funding through the FY2024 Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program. With an additional $130,860 local match from the Community Improvement Plan, the total funding for this school-focused safety effort amounts to $654,300.
What’s Next?
The SS4A Plan is expected to be adopted by the city council this spring, with implementation rolling out as funding becomes available. The city encourages all residents to take advantage of this opportunity to help prioritize street safety improvements before the public feedback period closes.
