Amarillo College officially welcomed its new president, Jamelle Conner, at a reception Tuesday afternoon in the College Union Building. The event marked a historic moment as Conner became the institution’s 15th president and its first female leader. Faculty, staff, students, and community members gathered to celebrate her arrival as the college approaches its 100th anniversary.
“I’m truly honored to join such a dynamic community,” Conner said. “Every conversation here has given me a clearer picture of our challenges and opportunities, and I look forward to building on our successes.”
Jay Barrett, Chairman of the Amarillo College Board of Regents, emphasized that Conner’s hiring was based on merit rather than historical significance.
“People have made a big deal about us hiring our first female president, but that was never our focus,” Barrett said. “We conducted a nationwide search, and every road led us to Jamelle Conner. With her background, experience, and impressive business acumen, she was simply the best candidate for the job.”
Conner’s arrival ends an 18-month period without a president, and Barrett praised her ability to take immediate action.
“In just two weeks, she’s already achieved so much,” he added. “Her energy is like a wind-up toy—once wound up, it just springs into action.”
A structured 102-day integration plan has guided Conner’s first weeks on the job. She has been visiting Amarillo College campuses in Hereford, Dumas, and other locations to meet students, faculty, and community members.
“This isn’t just about meeting people,” Conner explained. “It’s about truly understanding the unique needs of each community we serve. I’m eager to collaborate with local business leaders, educators, and community members to foster growth and excellence.”
The reception underscored the strong sense of community that defines Amarillo College, with attendees expressing enthusiasm for Conner’s leadership.
“The outpouring of support today was overwhelming,” she said. “I feel empowered by everyone’s commitment, and I’m excited to embark on this journey together.”
