Trump’s inauguration ceremony moved indoors

President-elect Donald Trump’s second inauguration ceremony is being moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda due to an Arctic blast bringing bitterly cold weather to Washington, D.C. Originally scheduled for the West Front of the Capitol, the event will now be held in a more controlled environment to prioritize safety for attendees, law enforcement, and performers.

Vice President-elect JD Vance will also be sworn in during the indoor ceremony.

A Historic Chill

According to forecasts, Monday's high temperatures are expected to hover in the low 20s, with wind chills making it feel closer to single digits. The National Weather Service has also indicated the possibility of fresh snow following a storm on Sunday. If predictions hold, this inauguration could rival Ronald Reagan’s 1985 ceremony as one of the coldest in history. Reagan’s swearing-in was similarly moved indoors due to frigid conditions.

“It is my obligation to protect the People of our Country, but before we even begin, we have to think of the Inauguration itself,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The weather forecast... could take temperatures into severe record lows. There is an Arctic blast sweeping the Country.”

Trump added that his primary concern is for the safety of those attending the event, including law enforcement, first responders, and supporters who would otherwise endure hours in freezing conditions.

Inauguration Details Adjusted

Despite the indoor move, the ceremony will proceed with traditional components, including the inaugural address, prayers, speeches, and performances, all taking place in the Capitol Rotunda. The change means fewer people will be able to witness the proceedings in person.

However, Trump reassured supporters that Capital One Arena will be opened as a live viewing venue for those wishing to watch the ceremony in real-time. The venue will also host the presidential parade, which typically occurs down Pennsylvania Avenue but has been moved indoors due to the weather.

“The various Dignitaries and Guests will be brought into the Capitol. This will be a very beautiful experience for all, and especially for the large TV audience!” Trump posted.

Traditional Festivities Continue

Other planned events, including the inaugural balls on Monday evening, are expected to proceed as scheduled. Additionally, Trump is hosting a “victory rally” on Sunday afternoon at Capital One Arena.

The modifications to the ceremony may disappoint some supporters, as Trump has been vocal in the past about drawing large crowds to his events. His first inauguration in 2017 sparked controversy when then-press secretary Sean Spicer claimed it had the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, despite photographic evidence suggesting otherwise.

Nonetheless, Trump’s team is optimistic about the unique circumstances, emphasizing safety and comfort for attendees. “Dress warmly!” Trump urged in his post, acknowledging that some supporters may still brave the cold.

As Washington prepares for a historic and frigid inauguration day, all eyes will turn to the Capitol Rotunda and the adaptations made to ensure this milestone event proceeds smoothly.
