Clovis City Manager Justin Howalt announced Friday that Deputy Police Chief Trevor Thron will take the helm as Clovis’ next Chief of Police, effective March 1. Thron’s appointment follows the retirement of Chief Roy Rice, who will step down on February 28 after a distinguished career.
Thron, a 17-year veteran of law enforcement, has dedicated his career to ensuring public safety in Clovis. His extensive experience includes serving three years as the commander of the department’s SWAT team, during which he also spent seven years as a sniper. Additionally, Thron worked as a crime scene investigator with the Major Crimes Unit for 13 years. He has held a range of other key positions within the department, including field training officer, detective, and agent with the Region V Drug Task Force.
As deputy chief, Thron has prioritized innovative crime prevention strategies, officer recruitment and retention efforts, and fostering stronger community engagement. He has earned a reputation for his commitment to transparency and strengthening trust between law enforcement and the community.
Thron brings an impressive educational background to his new role. He holds a bachelor’s degree with concentrations in Criminal Justice and Agriculture and is a graduate of the FBI-LEEDA Leadership Institute Trilogy, a nationally recognized program for law enforcement leadership.
In a statement reflecting his vision for the department, Thron emphasized his dedication to collaboration and public trust. “As Chief of Police, I am committed to continuing to foster collaboration with city leaders, state agencies, and community organizations,” he said. “My vision is to enhance public trust, reduce the fear and occurrence of crime, and ensure Clovis remains a safe and thriving community for current residents and future generations.”
