In a heartbreaking incident this morning, tragedy struck at Gateway Elementary when a second-grade student lost their life following an accident in the school's designated drop-off area.
At approximately 8 a.m., Borger first responders were called to the scene after the child’s coat became caught in a vehicle door as they exited. A senior school administrator, who was nearby, immediately attempted to intervene. However, the incident occurred so quickly that it could not be stopped.
School officials and first responders on-site began life-saving efforts immediately. The child was rushed by Borger EMS to Golden Plains Community Hospital, where medical staff continued those efforts. Despite their best attempts, the child succumbed to their injuries.
Due to the sensitive nature of the incident and out of respect for the grieving family, the student’s name has not been released.
The Borger community is in mourning, with an outpouring of support for the family and those closely connected to the young student. Parents, teachers, and community leaders alike are rallying to provide comfort to one another as they process the devastating loss.
Counseling services are expected to be made available for students, staff, and families at Gateway Elementary in the coming days.
