The Amarillo Fire Department (AFD) has released details about a three-alarm fire that swept through multiple structures in the downtown area on Wednesday evening, causing significant damage but fortunately no injuries.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at 610 Southeast 11th Avenue at approximately 5:16 p.m. Heavy smoke, intense flames, and downed power lines in the east alley greeted first responders as they arrived on the scene. The fire, which originated in a covered parking area, quickly spread to a nearby home and other adjacent buildings, with flames piercing through rooftops.
The AFD mobilized a substantial response, dispatching 16 fire apparatus and 54 personnel to battle the inferno. Additional units were brought in to secure water supply lines and provide relief to the initial crews.
Evacuations were carried out for nearby occupants as thick smoke and flying embers, carried by strong winds, created hazardous conditions. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among residents or firefighters.
According to officials, the fire damaged a variety of structures and property, including a home, a parking structure, two vehicles, and a motorcycle. The total damage from property and contents is estimated to be approximately $170,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the AFD Fire Marshal’s Office, which had yet to determine its origin as of Thursday morning.
