Shooting in downtown Amarillo leaves one dead, eight injured; Suspects in custody

In the early hours of Sunday morning, the Amarillo community was shaken by a tragic shooting outside a nightclub in the 700 block of South Polk Street. At approximately 2:05 AM, the Amarillo Emergency Communications Center received a barrage of 911 calls reporting gunfire in the downtown area.

Eyewitnesses stated that a vehicle approached the entrance of the nightclub before an individual exited the car, armed with a rifle, and opened fire into a large crowd gathered outside. After discharging multiple rounds, the suspect quickly returned to the vehicle, which fled the scene.

In a remarkable act of courage, a witness followed the vehicle and contacted 911, providing critical updates on its direction of travel. Thanks to this tip, Randall County Sheriff’s deputies intercepted the vehicle near Hillside and Bell Street, apprehending three suspects.

Victims and Response

Nine individuals sustained gunshot wounds in the attack. Responding Amarillo police officers administered immediate life-saving aid at the scene, joined shortly thereafter by Amarillo firefighters and paramedics from AMR.

Six victims were transported to two local hospitals via ambulance, while three others arrived at medical facilities in private vehicles. Tragically, 25-year-old John Love Louima succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. His family has been notified, and the community mourns his loss.

The remaining victims are currently undergoing treatment, with their conditions varying.

Suspects and Investigation

Authorities identified the shooter as 23-year-old Robert Kenney Knox of Amarillo. Knox was charged with murder and eight counts of deadly conduct/discharge of a firearm. The driver, 21-year-old Nahryah Hilesta Ines Hayes, also of Amarillo, faces identical charges.

A third individual, 22-year-old Britt Brinson Cave, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was charged with public intoxication. The suspects were booked into the Potter County and Randall County Detention Centers.

During the investigation, officers recovered a firearm, shell casings, and other evidence believed to be connected to the shooting. Preliminary findings indicate that the incident stemmed from an earlier altercation inside the nightclub.

The Amarillo Police Department's Homicide Unit continues to investigate and urges anyone with video footage or information to call 806-378-9468.
