The Amarillo Police Department is investigating an early Thursday morning shooting in which a man was fatally shot by officers.
According to a police statement, officers responded to a 911 hang-up call at approximately 2:36 a.m. at a residence in the 5200 block of South Travis Street. Upon arrival, they were allowed entry into the home by the homeowner, who informed them that another resident had likely made the 911 call.
As officers attempted to speak with the identified resident, the situation escalated when the man emerged from a room holding a loaded shotgun. Police allege that the man fired at the officers, prompting them to return fire.
The man was struck and officers reportedly initiated life-saving measures while awaiting emergency medical personnel. Despite these efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.
No other individuals were harmed during the incident. The Amarillo Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene, and the department stated that the investigation remains ongoing.
