In a sweeping move on his first full day in office, President Donald Trump’s administration has reignited its aggressive approach to immigration enforcement, arresting hundreds of individuals residing in the U.S. illegally. The arrests, carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), were announced Wednesday by border czar Tom Homan.
According to Homan, the detainees included individuals convicted of violent crimes such as murder, rape, and sexual assault, with some of the victims being children. Speaking on Fox & Friends, Homan emphasized that ICE is targeting "public safety threats" and "national security threats," a promise made during Trump’s campaign.
A Renewed Focus on Enforcement
The renewed crackdown aligns with President Trump’s broader immigration agenda, which prioritizes the removal of over 1.4 million undocumented immigrants deemed high-risk. On Monday, Trump declared a national emergency to address the situation at the southern border, which has seen record crossings in recent years.
"ICE is doing their job," Homan said, praising the agency’s efforts. The arrests come alongside an executive order invoking the Immigration and Nationality Act, which grants ICE authority to pursue and deport individuals residing in the U.S. without legal documentation, regardless of whether they have committed additional crimes.
Nationwide Impact
The arrests mark the beginning of a nationwide operation targeting major metropolitan areas. Cities like Chicago, a sanctuary city, are bracing for an expected wave of federal activity, although significant raids have yet to occur there. Businesses in Chicago’s shopping district have reported a dramatic drop in foot traffic, as residents stay home in anticipation of ICE operations.
The administration faces logistical hurdles in its plans for mass deportations, including the need for additional detention centers. ICE currently operates around 200 facilities, but the sheer scale of planned operations may require more. Large-scale deportations are expected to commence within days.
Military Support at the Border
To bolster border security, Trump authorized the deployment of 1,500 active-duty troops to the southern border, adding to the 2,200 already stationed in El Paso, Texas. Homan described the administration’s efforts as a “game-changer,” noting that 766 individuals were apprehended at the border in the 24 hours since Trump took office.
