City of Canyon secures funding for 8th Street sidewalk project to boost school safety

The City of Canyon has been awarded Category 9 Funding through the Amarillo Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to develop a sidewalk and multi-modal project along 8th Street, creating a safer connection between Canyon Intermediate School and Canyon Junior High School.

The project, announced during a recent Canyon City Commission meeting, aims to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists traveling between the two schools. It includes the construction of sidewalks and a shared-use path, designed to ease the congestion often experienced during school pick-up and drop-off times.

The total estimated cost of the project is $977,650, with $714,456 funded federally and $24,581 contributed by the state. The local match of $238,613 will be split evenly between Canyon ISD and the City of Canyon.

Canyon City Manager Joe Price emphasized the importance of the project during the meeting. "I don't know if you guys have ever been around there during school pick-up or drop-off. It can be a nightmare at times, for sure," Price said. "We're fortunate to get this through the MPO."

Price also noted the significance of being the first recipient of the MPO's Category 9 Funding. "We're the first guinea pig out of the gates," he said. "We worked with Canyon ISD to get some of their thoughts on how to improve our sidewalk system between the two schools. This one was definitely at the top of the list because it's affordable."

Construction is scheduled to take place during the summer months to minimize disruption to school operations. The project will commence after the conclusion of the 2025-26 school year, ensuring the safety and convenience of students and parents.
