City of Canyon now accepting 2025 general election candidate applications


City officials announced today that applications are officially open for candidates interested in running in the City of Canyon’s 2025 General Election, scheduled for May 3.

“Applying for a place on the ballot for the General Election is a big decision,” said City Secretary Gretchen Mercer. “To do so shows you have the heart of a servant wishing to provide a voice for your community. In the 20 years I’ve had the honor of accepting applications, it always gives me a sense of pride to see the dedication of those when sharing why they want to invest in Canyon.”

The upcoming election will feature five open positions, including the role of Mayor and four City Commission seats. These positions represent critical leadership roles within the city, and candidates are encouraged to step forward to shape the future of the Canyon community.

Key Deadlines and Requirements for Candidates

Application Deadline: February 14, 2025

Write-In Candidate Deadline: February 18, 2025

To qualify for candidacy, individuals must meet specific requirements:

Be a U.S. citizen.

Be at least 18 years old by the start of the term.

Be a registered voter in the election territory.

Have lived in Texas for at least one year and in the City of Canyon for at least 12 months preceding the election.

Must not have been judged totally or partially mentally incapacitated without voting rights by a court.

Must not have an unresolved felony conviction without a pardon or release of related disabilities.

Must not be in arrears on taxes or liabilities owed to the City of Canyon.

City officials stressed that a complete list of qualifications and additional resources are included in the candidate packet, which also features an election calendar. These materials are available on the city’s website or at the City Manager’s Office located on the second floor of City Hall.

No Fees for Applications

The City of Canyon has waived application fees, making the process more accessible to those interested in public service.
