Caroline Fairly, State Representative for Texas' 87th District, announced her support for Dustin Burrows to be the next Speaker of the Texas House.
Fairly's decision comes amid mounting pressure from outside interest groups and political operatives advocating for Representative David Cook. Despite Cook's widespread support among her freshman colleagues, Fairly emphasized her independent stance and belief that Burrows better represents conservative leadership.
“Mr. Cook is a good man, and I am confident we would work well together if he becomes Speaker,” Fairly stated. “However, I believe Representative Burrows is more conservative, will provide stronger leadership, and will help the House pass bold, conservative legislation.”
Fairly acknowledged circulating accusations that Burrows had allegedly "made deals" with Democrats to secure the Speaker role but dismissed these claims based on direct conversations and her judgment. “If I believed this to be true, I would not vote for him,” she affirmed.
Highlighting a broader climate of political intimidation, Fairly criticized external campaigns that have targeted those supporting Burrows with threats of primary challenges. Despite these pressures, she pledged to stand firm.
“I won’t start my tenure as your representative capitulating to outside pressure to place a vote I disagree with,” Fairly said.
She also pointed to the potential regional benefits of having Burrows, who hails from the Panhandle region, as Speaker. Fairly suggested that Burrows' leadership, supported by Representatives Smithee, King, Tepper, and herself, would grant the Panhandle unprecedented influence in legislative decisions.
