Canyon Mayor Gary Hinders running for reelection

On Wednesday, Canyon Mayor Gary Hinders officially filed to seek reelection, reaffirming his commitment to the city he has served for over two decades. Hinders, a familiar face in local leadership, first assumed the role of mayor in May 2017, after serving for many years on the Canyon City Commission.

Throughout his time in office, Hinders has played a pivotal role in shaping Canyon's development, often balancing strategic growth with the preservation of the community’s unique charm. His leadership extended beyond policy-making as he chaired a critical task force addressing the city's water needs and sustainability—an issue of growing importance in the Texas Panhandle.

Strong Ties to Community and Business

In addition to his mayoral duties, Hinders holds a key position as senior vice president of commercial lending at First United Bank in Canyon. He graduated from West Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture business and economics. Hinders has deep roots in Canyon, having lived there for over 47 years.

Hinders maintains deep connections to his alma mater and the broader Canyon community. He actively participates on advisory committees for WTAMU’s School of Business and School of Agriculture and serves on multiple community boards, including the Canyon Economic Development Corporation and Dreamland Cemetery board. His involvement with civic groups such as the Noon Lions Club underscores his dedication to service and engagement.

Recognition and Community Impact

The mayor's contributions have not gone unnoticed. In 2018, the Canyon Chamber of Commerce named Gary and his wife, Linda, as the city’s Man and Woman of the Year—a testament to their collective efforts in enhancing community life.

Looking Ahead

As the city prepares for the upcoming election, residents can expect a campaign centered on Hinders’ track record of leadership and his vision for a sustainable, prosperous Canyon. His long-standing dedication to public service, business acumen, and passion for the community position him as a formidable contender in the race.

The mayor's decision to run for reelection signals continuity and stability for a city that has experienced significant growth and transformation under his leadership. Canyon voters will soon decide whether to extend his stewardship for another term.
