Bowie Middle School hosts annual Socks for the Homeless drive, continuing a tradition of giving and learning

Bowie Middle School is once again hosting its annual Socks for the Homeless sock drive, and they are still accepting donations. The school is collecting both new and used socks for men, women, and children, with the goal of providing warmth to those in need during the winter season.

David Martinez, the Bowie Middle School student council sponsor, explained that the sock drive is more than just a charity event – it’s a valuable learning experience for students.

“Some of life’s greatest lessons cannot be found and will not be found in a textbook,” Martinez said. “Oftentimes, when I run into former students of mine who were in student council, that’s one of the questions that they ask me if we still do our sock drive. They let me know that’s just one of the most memorable moments, not only in elementary, middle, or high school, but it’s a memorable moment throughout their academic career. I’m just glad that we’re able to continue this tradition.”

The sock drive has been a longstanding tradition at Bowie Middle School, one that continues to resonate with the students and staff year after year. Eighth-grade student Serena Lucero, who is participating in the drive, shared her excitement about continuing the tradition of helping those in need.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to continue a tradition that we’ve had here at Bowie for many years,” Lucero said. “Being able to go out and give to people who need it so they are able to stay warm during the winter time or during the cold season so no one gets sick or anything like that.”

The sock drive has become an important part of the school’s commitment to community service. Martinez mentioned that in addition to donating socks, students and staff also plan to provide breakfast burritos to those in need at the Guyon Saunders Resource Center on February 19.

“Over the past 10 years, we’ve been able to donate over 20,000 pairs of socks,” Martinez said. “For the past five years, we’ve also been able to provide breakfast burritos. Over 250 on average each year is how many breakfast burritos we make.”

The sock drive will continue accepting donations until February 18. Socks can be dropped off at designated donation buckets located throughout the school.

Bowie Middle School’s Socks for the Homeless initiative serves as a reminder that small acts of kindness can make a significant impact on a community. Through their efforts, students are not only making a difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, but they are also learning invaluable life lessons that will last a lifetime.
