Armstrong County Sheriff’s Office seeks public help in search for missing man

The Armstrong County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating Gary Joseph “PJ” Marcantel, Jr., who went missing Saturday after reporting a vehicle breakdown on Highway 287.

According to Sheriff Melissa Anderson, Marcantel called 911 around 10:45 a.m. on January 18, stating his vehicle had broken down approximately 18-20 miles south of Claude. However, when deputies arrived at the scene, they found the vehicle but no sign of Marcantel.

Despite extensive search efforts involving multiple agencies, ATVs, K9 units, helicopters, and searches on foot, no contact has been made with Marcantel as of 10 a.m. Tuesday. Sheriff Anderson confirmed that the search spanned the canyon area near the reported breakdown and other suspected locations along nearby highways.

“This has been a coordinated effort with surrounding agencies, and we are doing everything possible to locate PJ,” said Anderson. “Deputies and dispatchers are working tirelessly to gather information and collect cell phone data, but at this time, there are no more leads to pursue.”

The Sheriff’s Office has now shifted its strategy, continuing patrols and maintaining contact with Marcantel’s family but has suspended the large-scale search.

“We, as an agency, will not stop checking key areas and assisting the family in every way possible,” Sheriff Anderson assured.

Anyone with information on Gary Joseph “PJ” Marcantel, Jr.'s whereabouts is urged to contact the Armstrong County Sheriff’s Office immediately.

Marcantel’s disappearance has left his family and the community seeking answers. Authorities hope that renewed public attention will bring forward critical information to aid the investigation.
