Amarillo solid waste transfer station temporarily closed due to water line rupture

The City of Amarillo (COA) Solid Waste Transfer Station will remain temporarily closed Tuesday following a water line rupture caused by subzero temperatures, city officials announced.

City facilities crews are actively working to repair the damage, but the ongoing low temperatures are complicating efforts, potentially extending repair timelines.

The transfer station plays a crucial role in the city’s waste management system. It serves as a central facility where trash collection trucks deposit waste for temporary storage, enabling them to unload locally rather than making long trips to the landfill.

With the transfer station out of service, COA Solid Waste trucks will now transport trash collections directly to the landfill. This adjustment will result in delays for residential trash collection, as the additional travel time significantly impacts operations.

“The COA recognizes the inconvenience this may cause to residents and appreciates their patience as the issue is resolved as quickly and safely as possible,” city officials said in a statement.

Residents are encouraged to plan for potential delays in trash collection while the repairs are underway. Further updates will be provided by the city as new information becomes available.
