Amarillo community honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A diverse crowd gathered at the Palo Duro High School Activity Center to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the annual MLK Citywide Celebration. The event, which drew hundreds of attendees, was a heartfelt tribute to Dr. King’s enduring impact and a call to action for continued progress toward justice and equality.

The celebration featured powerful speeches, inspiring performances, and reflections on the importance of unity in a divided world. Community leaders and youth played a central role in the day’s events, emphasizing the importance of carrying Dr. King’s dream into the future.

A Celebration of Legacy and Unity

Local officials, including Mayor Cole Stanley, Judge Titiana Frausto, and Amarillo City Council Place 1 candidate Patrick Miller, joined the celebration. Patrick Miller opened the event with a prayer and words of gratitude for the sacrifices of civil rights leaders.

Mayor Stanley delivered a poignant message on the importance of unity and truth.

“Division has always been what keeps us from coming together,” Stanley said. “Unity is preferable, but the truth is non-negotiable. The truth says that you have value, and your value doesn’t come from your skin color, your neighborhood, your eye color, or your height. It’s intrinsic and universal.”

Attendees of all ages nodded in agreement as Stanley’s words resonated, reflecting Dr. King’s message of valuing the content of character over external differences.

Youth Take Center Stage

Students from Amarillo ISD added a special vibrancy to the event through music, dance, and cheerleading performances. Bands played stirring renditions of iconic songs from the civil rights era, while choirs sang uplifting anthems of hope and unity. Cheerleaders energized the crowd with routines designed to inspire pride and perseverance.

RJ Soleyjacks, a committee member for the MLK Citywide Celebration, highlighted the importance of involving young people in honoring Dr. King’s legacy.

“It’s just an opportunity for our young people to get together, share their talents, but also realize how similar they are,” Soleyjacks said. “Any time you see a young person, it fills the room with hope for a better tomorrow.”

Keynote: Educating the Next Generation

The event’s keynote speaker, Michael Jackson, who serves as Caprock High School’s head boys basketball coach and African American Studies teacher, delivered an impassioned speech. Jackson stressed the importance of teaching younger generations about the history of the civil rights movement and the sacrifices that made today’s freedoms possible.

“If we don’t know certain things, we’re doomed to repeat particular things,” Jackson said. “Young people need to understand and appreciate the rights and privileges we have because of Dr. King and the people of his generation. They sacrificed so much for us to be where we are today.”

Jackson also addressed the challenges of modern society, including efforts to roll back hard-won civil rights progress.

“Some of the things Dr. King and others fought for—people want to repeal those things and take us backward,” Jackson said. “It’s up to us to pass the baton to the next generation and make sure they know their history, so they can continue to move forward.”

Renewing the Call to Action

The celebration concluded with a powerful call to action, encouraging attendees to remain committed to Dr. King’s ideals by promoting unity and supporting local initiatives that aim to address social inequities.

“This event is a time to step back, honor the work Martin Luther King has done, and commit to making the world a better place,” Soleyjacks said.

Jackson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for greater community involvement and collaboration.

“We’re fragmented right now,” Jackson said. “The whole nation is fragmented. But if we can come together across lines of division, we can make things better for everyone.”

A Community Inspired

As the event came to a close, the sense of hope and determination was palpable. Attendees left inspired by the day’s messages and reminded of the importance of Dr. King’s vision of equality, justice, and unity for all.

The celebration served not only as a tribute to Dr. King but also as a rallying cry for the Amarillo community to continue his work.
