Amarillo City Council weighs options for $275,000 Buc-ee’s donation

The Amarillo City Council is considering creative ways to allocate a generous $275,000 donation from Buc-ee’s, announced during their meeting on Tuesday. This funding, part of a Chapter 380 incentive agreement with the previous city council, is earmarked for community-oriented projects, civic events, and other initiatives to benefit Amarillo residents.

Deputy City Manager Andrew Freeman explained that the donation stems from a clause in the agreement with Buc-ee’s, which recently opened a new location in Amarillo. “They had a clause in there that they would contribute a $275,000 donation for a community purpose to be later determined by city council,” Freeman said.

The council discussed collaborating with one or more 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to distribute the funds effectively. Freeman emphasized that the money could be allocated across multiple nonprofits and does not need to be awarded to a single organization.

“It’s important, just from the community partnership nature, to have this opportunity with Buc-ee’s as a new partner in town,” Freeman said. “This donation is not coming from general fund tax dollars or sales tax dollars—it’s purely a goodwill contribution, and it’s a great opportunity for the City Council and Buc-ee’s to work together to benefit the community.”

The council is set to identify potential nonprofit partners during its next meeting on January 28. A final vote on the donation’s allocation is expected in early February.

This donation reflects Buc-ee’s commitment to supporting the local community and highlights the company’s broader civic engagement strategy. For Amarillo, it represents a chance to strengthen nonprofit partnerships and address critical community needs.

Residents are encouraged to attend upcoming council meetings to learn more about how the funds might be used to enhance Amarillo’s civic landscape.
