The Amarillo City Council is set to meet on Tuesday, January 30, at 3 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall to discuss a wide range of issues, including a potential property tax exemption for childcare facilities, city legal protocols, and the possible renaming of MediPark. Members of the public can sign up for comment online, by phone at 806-378-3014, or in person at least 15 minutes before the meeting begins.
Childcare Tax Exemption and Community Outreach Funds
A key item on the agenda is a discussion about implementing a local property tax exemption for childcare facilities. The measure aims to address Amarillo's ongoing challenge of affordable, accessible childcare, an issue highlighted by local leaders and the Amarillo Area Foundation. In 2024, the City of Canyon passed a similar exemption to support childcare operations. Amarillo could follow suit to assist working families and local businesses affected by the childcare shortage.
The council will also consider how to allocate a $275,000 Community Outreach Donation from Buc-ee’s, exploring opportunities to maximize its impact on city programs and services.
City Council Legal Counsel and AEDC Bylaws
Council members will revisit the role of George Hyde of Hyde Kelley LLP, who has been providing legal counsel to the City Council since 2024. Hyde’s involvement in amending the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) bylaws has drawn attention, with proposed amendments recently approved by the AEDC board on January 15. The council will also discuss a resolution that could repeal Hyde’s designation as the council’s personal legal counsel.
MediPark Renaming Proposal
A proposal to rename MediPark to John Ward Park will also be reviewed. The name change would honor John Ward, Amarillo’s city manager from 1983 to 2005, who passed away in March 2024. Ward’s contributions to the city are widely recognized, and renaming the park is seen as a fitting tribute.
Additional Items: Snow Response and Fire Department Upgrades
The council will review the city’s response to recent record-breaking snowfall and consider issuing debt to fund six fire engines and two ladder trucks. Other agenda items include grant applications, rezoning ordinances, and the sale and purchase of city assets, such as an accessible dock for MediPark.
Public Participation Encouraged
Residents are encouraged to attend or provide input on these important decisions. Public comments can help shape policies that affect Amarillo’s future.
