The Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Amarillo District has announced the commencement of a feasibility study to evaluate the potential upgrade of US 87/US 287 to interstate standards, extending I-27 from Amarillo to a logical terminus north of Dumas. The study will focus on the US 87/US 287 corridor in Randall, Potter, and Moore counties, starting from SL 335 in Amarillo and covering the route northward to US 287.
Study Goals and Scope
According to TxDOT officials, the study will assess the current and future transportation, safety, and mobility needs along the US 87/US 287 corridor. The evaluation will explore concepts for upgrading the route to meet interstate standards, analyzing the feasibility, costs, and logistics involved.
This project is part of broader efforts to enhance regional transportation infrastructure, potentially extending the I-27 corridor and supporting economic growth in the Texas Panhandle.
