New York City authorities have charged Luigi Mangione, 26, with murder in the second degree in connection with the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week. Mangione faces additional charges, including criminal possession of a weapon and possession of a forged instrument.
Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, was arrested Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized at a McDonald’s. Police say he became visibly nervous when questioned about his recent whereabouts. Investigators found a ghost gun, silencer, and anti-corporate writings on him, linking him to the attack.
Thompson was killed outside the New York Hilton Midtown as he prepared to address an investor meeting. Detective Yousef Demes stated that multiple shots were fired, but an autopsy revealed a fatal gunshot wound to the torso.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the incident as a "brazen, targeted attack." Authorities allege Mangione fled to Pennsylvania, where he now faces additional charges, including firearm violations and providing false identification.
