The City of Stratford is poised to experience significant economic growth and job creation following the announcement of a new solar panel manufacturing facility set to be developed on a 170-acre city-owned plot. This multi-million dollar project marks a major milestone in the city’s renewable energy and economic development efforts.
The project began in 2022 as a collaboration between Aspen Woods Group and Rob Rockefeller Standard Carbon, originally aimed at establishing a solar farm. However, the vision has since expanded into a large-scale manufacturing facility.
“It started out as a small solar farm that they were looking at doing, and they have since expanded their company quite a bit,” said Mayor Greg Wright. “And here we are today talking about a multi-million dollar facility out here.”
Economic Boost for Stratford
The Sherman County Development Committee has highlighted the wide-ranging benefits of this development, citing increased tax revenue, job creation, and a boost to local businesses. The project is expected to generate up to 700 new jobs in the area, offering a substantial uplift to the local economy.
“Any kind of influx of people coming in, they’re going to buy gas and food and utilities and pay taxes and eat in our restaurants. Just different things like that,” said Kathy Allen, director of the Sherman County Development Committee.
Support for Local Institutions
Tax revenues from the facility are also projected to provide much-needed funding for schools and other community services. Allen emphasized how critical the project is for the region. “We’re hurting. We need the tax basing here. We need an influx of students and to help our school, and this company is bringing in so much for us,” she said.
A Renewable Energy Hub
The shift from a solar farm to a manufacturing facility reflects broader ambitions for Stratford to become a hub for renewable energy innovation. With the backing of major players like Aspen Woods Group and Rob Rockefeller Standard Carbon, the facility represents a step forward in addressing the growing demand for clean energy technology.
Community Excitement
The city and its residents are optimistic about the development's potential to invigorate the local economy and community. The ripple effect of the facility’s operations is expected to benefit businesses ranging from restaurants to gas stations, while also attracting new residents and fostering a more robust tax base.
Looking Ahead
Construction timelines for the facility have yet to be announced, but the anticipation surrounding this project is palpable. Mayor Wright and the Sherman County Development Committee are committed to ensuring the project’s success and maximizing its benefits for the Stratford community.
