Construction underway on FM 2590 (Soncy Road) safety improvement project

Work has officially commenced on a $28 million project aimed at enhancing safety along a key nine-mile stretch of FM 2590 (Soncy Road), connecting Amarillo to Canyon. The initiative, overseen by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), seeks to modernize the corridor with traffic light installations, turn lane additions, and critical drainage upgrades.

Project Scope

The project, stretching from south State Loop (SL) 335 in Amarillo to US 60 in Canyon, will see the installation of new traffic lights at four major intersections:

Country Club Road
Hunsley Road
Lair Road (FM 2219)
McCormick Road

Right and left-turn lanes will also be added at these intersections to streamline traffic flow and reduce collision risks. Additionally, extensive overlay operations are planned to ensure smoother road surfaces, while upgraded drainage systems will mitigate flooding and water pooling concerns.

Timeline and Traffic Impact

Construction is scheduled to last until early 2027. During this period, drivers should anticipate lane closures and potential delays as crews work to deliver the improvements. TxDOT emphasizes the importance of caution in work zones, advising motorists to reduce speeds and allocate extra travel time to accommodate potential disruptions.

Safety and Convenience

"Safety is at the heart of this project," TxDOT officials stated. "We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to deliver a quality, safe product to them." The upgrades are expected to enhance not only the functionality of FM 2590 but also the overall safety for the thousands of daily commuters who rely on this vital roadway.
