City of Amarillo considers proposal to honor late city manager John Ward

The City of Amarillo (COA) is exploring a proposal to honor the late John Ward, who served as city manager from 1983 to 2005, following his death in March at the age of 70. The City Council has discussed renaming either Medical Center Park or the Comanche Trail Golf Complex in his memory.

“John Ward served the City of Amarillo with distinction for decades, leaving a lasting legacy through his contributions to the community,” said Michael Kashuba, COA Director of Parks and Recreation. “While no final decisions have been made, the city is committed to recognizing individuals who have significantly impacted Amarillo.”

Residents are encouraged to participate in the decision-making process, with two public hearings scheduled for January:

Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) board meeting: 1 p.m., Jan. 15 at the PARD offices, 509 S. Johnson.
City Council meeting: 3 p.m., Jan. 28 at City Hall.

“The City of Amarillo values community engagement and encourages all residents to attend these sessions to voice their opinions,” Kashuba added.
