Canyon ISD provides update on Guardian/Defender Program

Canyon Independent School District provided an update on the progress of its Guardian/Defender Program, which allows employees to carry concealed firearms, at a school board meeting on Monday. The program, implemented at the start of the 2024/2025 school year, was adopted to comply with Texas' new school security law (House Bill 3), requiring all campuses to have armed personnel.

Deputy Superintendent Robyn Cranmer emphasized the district's commitment to safety, saying, “Safety has become something that’s at the very top priority list... We want people to be able to come to campus, do their job, and attend school without fear.”

Canyon ISD has expanded the program by adding more guardians and providing ongoing training. The district also reported progress in hiring school resource officers, adding five this year, with plans to work with law enforcement to increase that number. However, staffing challenges in law enforcement have made it difficult to place officers on every campus.

“The goal is to have an officer on every campus,” Cranmer stated. “But until we can achieve that, we will continue to meet the level of the law with guardians on our campus.”

The district plans to maintain the Guardian/Defender Program even if every campus gains a resource officer, ensuring armed personnel are available if officers are called away.
