Canyon City Commission sets $14 million bond election for fire station and police department renovations

The Canyon City Commission has scheduled a bond election for May 2025, proposing $14 million for renovations to the city’s fire station and police department. The decision, reached after months of discussions and a spirited debate during Tuesday's meeting, represents a compromise between competing proposals.

Place 2 Commissioner Cody Jones advocated for a $15 million bond, emphasizing the need to fully fund the project without relying on uncertain federal grants. "I just don't feel comfortable with the consequences of losing that [grant] from the federal government. I think we have the opportunity to fulfill the needs of the folks," Jones said.

Canyon Mayor Gary Hinders, however, pushed for a $13 million bond to limit the financial impact on taxpayers, highlighting that the bond would increase taxes by $36 annually for the average resident. "Why are we asking them to do that if we can get it done at $13 million?" Hinders questioned.

The $14 million compromise will fund the transformation of the former Gold Star Trust building into a new police department and add sleeping quarters at the fire station to support 24-hour staffing.

Voters will decide the bond's fate next May. If approved, the renovations aim to modernize and expand critical public safety facilities for the growing community.
