55 candidates vie for spots on Amarillo EDC board

Amarillo city officials announced that 55 applicants have submitted their names to fill four vacancies on the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) board. The list features a diverse mix of professionals, including business owners, realtors, attorneys, civic leaders, and retirees, all eager to contribute to shaping Amarillo’s economic future.

Notable applicants include former city council members Howard Smith and Freda Powell, several recent council candidates such as Claudette Smith, John Adair, Dean Crump, Chip Hunt, and Brendon G. Leggett, as well as former Texas Senate candidate Timothy S. Reid. Other prominent names are Michael Ford, a critic of the AEDC, Thomas Warren II, publisher of the Amarillo Pioneer, realtor Leona Grubbs, and Paul Borchardt, owner of Wonderland Amusement Park.

City officials are finalizing revisions to the AEDC’s foundational documents, including its Articles of Incorporation, bylaws, and budget, with votes planned for mid-January. The Amarillo City Council aims to appoint a permanent board by early February, ensuring the AEDC is fully operational.

The incoming board will oversee key initiatives such as business recruitment, workforce development, and budget planning, supporting Amarillo’s economic momentum through 2024 and beyond.
