On Saturday, 90 children from Canyon ISD elementary schools joined local law enforcement for the 19th annual “Shop With A Cop” event at the Walmart in Canyon.
The tradition, supported by Walmart donations, provides underprivileged children the opportunity to shop for Christmas gifts alongside members of the Randall County Sheriff’s Office, Randall County Fire Department, Canyon Police Department, and Canyon Fire Department.
Randall County Sheriff Chris Forbis expressed his enthusiasm for the event, calling it his favorite tradition.
“We have a lot of traditions, but this is, this is, my favorite tradition. Christmas time, the, you know, just the season and seeing all these kids—it’s just a great time to hang out with them,” said Forbis.
He also noted the touching moments the event often inspires. “In the past we have had some of the kids buy something for their siblings or buy something for their mother or father… it’s just kind of heartwarming, and when we do that, we might be able to pull a little bit more money and help them get a gift of their own.”
The annual event aims to spread holiday cheer and strengthen community bonds between local first responders and the children they serve.
