Potter County approves $1 million for Jim Line Road project

Potter County officials have approved a $1 million investment for the long-awaited Jim Line Road improvement project, designed to enhance safety and traffic flow near Bushland High School. The road, which serves as a key access point to the school campus, has been plagued by congestion and safety concerns due to its narrow design and heavy traffic volume, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Potter County Commissioner John Coffee, who represents Precinct Three, spearheaded the initiative after receiving consistent feedback from local residents and observing the increasing traffic issues. "It’s a narrow road that accesses the two newly built schools out there," Coffee said. "With the amount of traffic flow and after speaking with residents, I knew it was a problem that needed to be addressed."

The project will involve widening Jim Line Road by 11 feet and adding a dedicated turning lane, which officials hope will alleviate congestion and improve safety for students, parents, and faculty. The road serves as the primary route for those accessing both Bushland High School and the nearby Bushland Middle School.

"This is about making sure the students and parents can safely get in and out of the school parking lot without unnecessary delays or risk," Coffee added.

Funding for the project will come from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), a federal relief program that provides local governments with resources for community improvements. Coffee noted that the road's upgrade was a priority for local residents, many of whom had raised concerns about the growing traffic bottlenecks in the area.

The project is expected to take approximately 60 days to complete, with construction slated to begin in the spring of 2025, just around the time of spring break. Community members are encouraged to stay informed about construction timelines and potential traffic detours.

"This is a big step forward for the Bushland community, and it’s a necessary improvement to ensure safety for everyone who uses the road," said Coffee.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and reduce the risk of accidents, making the daily commute to Bushland High School safer for all.
