City of Canyon taking applications for Housing Rehabilitation Program

The City of Canyon has announced the opening of applications for its Housing Rehabilitation Program, which will fund up to three projects in its first year, with each project receiving a grant of up to $25,000. The program, aimed at improving the safety and livability of owner-occupied homes, targets households with low-to-moderate incomes in need of essential repairs and weatherization.

City officials highlighted that the Housing Rehabilitation Program is specifically designed for substandard properties that are both owned and occupied by residents with qualifying incomes. The program's primary goal is to address code violations and hazardous conditions, ensuring that homeowners in the Canyon area live in safe, healthy, and energy-efficient homes.

"This program is an incredible opportunity for homeowners to enhance the safety, comfort, and value of their homes while preserving the unique character of our community," said Lucas Raley, Canyon's Planning & Development Director. "By providing financial assistance to eligible residents, the Canyon Housing Rehabilitation Program addresses critical housing needs and helps ensure that low-to-moderate-income families can live in safe environments. This initiative is a key part of revitalizing neighborhoods and promoting long-term community sustainability."

The Housing Rehabilitation Program provides financial assistance in the form of no-interest, deferred payment loans, up to $25,000 per project. These loans are forgiven if the homeowner continues to reside in the property for five years following the rehabilitation. This structure is designed to make critical home repairs more accessible to families who might otherwise struggle to afford them.

Eligible applicants must meet certain income requirements, which vary depending on household size. For example, a one-person household can qualify with a gross income of up to $49,150, while an eight-person household can earn up to $92,600 and still be eligible for assistance.

In addition to providing financial support for housing repairs, the Canyon City Commission has approved the formation of a 501(c)3 non-profit organization to help fund the program. The City Commission has also established a board of directors, consisting of seven community representatives, to guide the program's efforts.

To apply for the Housing Rehabilitation Program, residents must first submit a pre-application form to determine eligibility. Once eligibility is verified, selected applicants will be invited to complete a full application for consideration.

The Canyon Housing Rehabilitation Program is part of the city’s broader efforts to support affordable housing initiatives and ensure that all residents, regardless of income, can live in homes that are safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient.
