WT hosting homeschool conference on November 8

West Texas A&M University will host a November event designed to provide homeschool students an easier path to college.

Deadline to register for the WT Homeschool Conference is Oct. 28 at wtamuweb.wufoo.com/forms/m1fvov4g10cyc3p/.

Admission is free.

The conference will be held following WT President Walter V. Wendler’s pledge to make the University the most homeschool-friendly university in the state.

“We purposefully pursue homeschooled students as we recognize the unique educational and social strengths they bring,” Wendler wrote in an Oct. 5 essay. “The data speaks for itself. Homeschooled students perform well in college.”

The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Happy State Bank Academic & Research Building on Russell Long Boulevard on WT’s Canyon Campus. It is designed for students in grades 8 through 12, said Mike Knox, vice president for enrollment management.

“We are working hard to make good on President Wendler’s pledge to make WT homeschool friendly,” Knox said. “We have a streamlined admissions process for homeschool students, affordable and easy to access dual enrollment options through the Pre-University Program, and access to our top scholarships through the SAT, ACT or Classical Learning Test. Our small classes give students easy and personal access to faculty, making our value proposition not just one of great cost, but also high quality.”

Among the topics to be discussed at the conference are ideal courses to take in high school, transcripts, dual enrollment and dual credit, and college admissions. Presenters are from WT, the Lone Star Homeschool Counseling Coalition and the Panhandle Christian Home Educators Association. PCHEA also will host a homeschool parent panel.

Attendees also will enjoy a free lunch and a WT campus tour, and they may also make appointments with WT admissions counselors.
