Superintendent Doug Loomis submits letter of retirement/resignation to AISD


The Amarillo Independent School District (AISD) school board is expected to discuss the retirement/resignation of Superintendent Doug Loomis at their meeting on Monday. Loomis has submitted his letter of retirement/resignation effective June 30, 2025.

According to the agenda for Monday's AISD school board meeting:

5.A. Information Items:

5.A.1. Deliberation regarding resignation, evaluation, discipline, changes of assignment and/or duties of employees, administrators and/or public officer(s)

5.A.2. Consultation with legal counsel regarding Superintendent Search process

5.B. Action Items:

5.B.1. Appointment, employment, leave of absence, or dismissal of public officer(s), district employee(s), teacher(s), teacher/coach(es), administrator(s), and/or supervisory staff

5.B.2. Approval of District staff to carry a firearm in accordance with TEC 37.0814

5.B.3. Possible action regarding letter of retirement/resignation from Superintendent Doug Loomis, to be effective June 30, 2025

When asked about his retirement/resignation, Loomis said "the rumors are true.” 

Loomis has been with AISD for almost four decades, working in schools in every quadrant and at every level. He began his career as a PE teacher at Wolflin Elementary School and then taught science and health at Fannin Middle School. As his career in AISD expanded, Loomis served as assistant principal at Houston Middle School, assistant principal at Palo Duro High School, principal of Amarillo High School, and then Executive Director over the Caprock cluster of schools. He also served five years as the District’s chief human resources officer before being named Interim Superintendent in October 2018.

The AISD school board named Loomis as the permanent superintendent in March 2019.

A native of Dalhart, Texas, Loomis is a graduate of Oklahoma Panhandle State University and he earned a Master’s degree in Education from West Texas A&M University. He and his wife Gisele, a retired teacher, have two grown children.
