TxDOT to begin major road and sidewalk project in Canyon

In coordination with the City of Canyon, TxDOT is scheduled to begin work next week on a $9.5 million dollar project to various safety improvements on US 87 (23rd Street) and SH 217 (4th Avenue/11th Street). The project limits will be on US 87 from Russell Long Boulevard to the south Canyon city limits and on SH 217 from US 60 to IH-27 . Improvements to ADA fixtures, sidewalks, drainage, signal lights, and road re-paving is expected to upgrade connectivity, mobility, and safety from street to street for the traveling public.

“We are excited to have sidewalk and pavement improvements on our main thoroughfares in Canyon,” said Joe Price, Canyon City Manager. “This project has been a priority for the City of Canyon, and TxDOT has taken note of that. The City and TxDOT went above and beyond to communicate with our property and business owners that will be affected in this area, to help ease their concerns. This project will benefit our whole community and enhance pedestrian safety.”

“Our number one priority when it comes to any TxDOT project is safety,” said Joe Chappell, P.E., TxDOT Amarillo Area Engineer. “We have been and will continue to work closely with the City of Canyon to ensure a safe traveling experience.”

Contractor Ti-Zack Concrete, LLC will complete the project in multiple phases, beginning with the ADA upgrades on July 22 on the west end of SH 217. Once work is completed on SH 217, crews will move over to the south Canyon city limits of US 87 to begin those improvements. The ADA, drainage, and signal light portion of this project is expected to be completed in November 2024.

Road re-paving is expected to begin on these roads, starting with SH 217 in late September 2024. The project’s anticipated completion date is April 2025.

During construction, drivers can expect various lane closures on these roadways. We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to deliver them a quality but most importantly a safe product.
