Elon Musk moving SpaceX and X headquarters to Texas

Tech mogul Elon Musk announced that he would be moving the headquarters of SpaceX from California to Texas.

In a follow up to his initial statement, Musk also said X’s headquarters would be moving to Austin.

“Have had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building,” Musk explained.

The social media platform formerly known as Twitter was acquired by Elon back in October 2022 for $44 billion.

Musk announced his move in response to California Gov. Gavin Newsom signing into law a bill that would ban school districts from having policies that require parental notification if their child identifies as transgender.

“This is the final straw,” Musk wrote on X. “Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas.”

Gov. Greg Abbott celebrated the move, writing “[t]his cements Texas as the leader is space exploration.”

SpaceX operates four rocket launch sites across the United States, but its main manufacturing facility and launch site for its reusable “Starship” project is Starbase, situated just below South Padre Island on the Gulf of Mexico.

In June, Musk successfully launched and safely returned the Starship Spacecraft and Super Heavy Rocket, together known simply as Starship.

Texas has been home to Tesla, another Musk company, since late 2021.

Musk moved its headquarters to Austin and opened a new manufacturing factory a little less than a year later.

Since establishing Texas as his home state Musk has taken an active role in seeking new business opportunities, such as starting a primary and secondary school focused on science, technology, engineering, and math.
