The Amarillo City Council is set to host its first regular meeting in the newly opened Amarillo City Hall on Tuesday at 3 p.m., where members will discuss various city projects and policies, including street updates, a proposed park renaming, child care tax exemptions, and local construction projects.
Key Agenda Items
Street & Traffic Updates – The council will review comprehensive street updates and consider the purchase of traffic signal camera systems to improve intersection safety. Additionally, they will discuss extending the construction deadline for Producer Owned Beef, a $670 million facility project first launched in 2022.
Park Renaming Proposal – A public hearing will be held on renaming Medical Center Park (Medi Park) to John Ward Memorial Park, honoring the city’s former manager who served from 1983 to 2005.
Child Care Tax Exemption – The council will consider an ad valorem property tax exemption for qualifying childcare facilities, an effort that could support local providers and improve access to affordable child care. This follows a similar move by the City of Canyon in August 2024.
Transformation Park Development – The council is expected to discuss funding for Transformation Park, a developing community resource designed to provide shelter, meals, and services for those in need. The facility includes a drop-in shelter, a day room, pallet homes, and a commercial kitchen.
Public Engagement & Safety Initiatives – The city continues to seek community input on its Safe Streets and Roads for All Plan, which aims to reduce severe and fatal traffic crashes by 35% by 2035.
